If you are not aware, Media Molecule (who made Little Big Planet) have been working on a games creation title since 2014 for the Playstation 4 called Dreams. From the live streams and trailers this is a worthy successor to the LBP franchise and should knock Project Spark into a cocked hat ( for those not familiar with this quaint English term, let’s just say it is going to make Project Spark look pretty dated and cumbersome).
The launch date is a very nebulous 2018, which could mean anytime – probably not tomorrow – but soon (ish). There is already some buzz amongst the older Project Spark members who gave up Spark in Aug 2016 and have been waiting for their replacement fix to come along. We didn’t realise it was going to take this long. For those still playing Project Spark, some are just passing the time for Dreams to start, while others will not be buying a Playstation, so will have to stick with Project Spark. I do not know how many of each type of person there is.
I am very excited about the prospect of working on a new creation game. I have a website all ready to be filled with lovely tutorials – http://www.dreamschool.co.uk . It will inevitably mean I will not have as much time to work on Project Spark. I will not abandon it entirely, but expect tutorials to slow from 2 a week to 1 every other week.
If Dreams is as absorbing and amazing to work with as all the trailers have led us to believe then I would imagine many Sparkers will jump ship. This is not a bad thing. Project Spark was amazing for its time, but it is 5 years since they built the core game and 5 years in computing is an amazingly long time, and we do need an improved experience, which Project Spark cannot give us (as all development and fixes have stopped). We also want to share our creativity, and Dreams will let us do that and collaborate together. Without the community sharing PS really is missing a vital part of what was great about it.
Project Spark will still be front and centre for me though, as I plan to recreate the assets in Dreams. Would be great to see some creations that look like Project Spark in Dreams. Not only that, but some of the props are really useful, and deserve a second outing. If you fancy joining in on that I hope to curate a Project Spark asset folder in Dreams, so you can let me know if you make any.
